A podcast about cult hacking! Cracking the cult code to understand what they are, how they work, how people leave and how to make sense of the world after leaving. Father and daughter team, media graduate Celine, and former cult member now organizational psychologist Stephen, explore how cults work, why they are so dangerous and the experience of leaving and making sense of the world. They speak to cult hackers from all over the world, from ex members to academics, from writers to filmmakers, and from therapists to activists. https://pod.link/1540824671 https://www.patreon.com/culthackers https://culthackers.com/ Music is Snap by Purple Planet Music Music: https://www.purple-planet.com

Today is a very personal episode with a very special guest because it's Sarah, Celine's mum and Stephen's wife. Warning that the episode contains some stories about familial abuse, threats and suicide attempts. Sarah talks openly about her difficult childhood, becoming a mum and dealing with matters of faith. Stephen and Sarah also talk about how they met and the hurdles they had to overcome both to be together and then to grow together as they exited the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Sorry you’ve had a terrible time. The fear of a parent is a particular type of fear isn’t it.

So pleased you shared your story. Even though it was under different circumstances I, and then my husband after we were married, lived in fear of my mom. We still do to an extent even though we’ve distance ourselves as much as possible over the last 30 years. But we were still in fear of what information would get back to my mom and then she’d pound us. We’ve just woken up in the last year so our fear has subsided considerably. Plus I changed my number. 😩

A very interesting interview, though upsetting to hear how Sarah was treated. She related it very lucidly

Sounds like Sarah & I had similar mother experiences. So glad she was able to tell her story. ☺️
