Monday Jan 11, 2021
Part 1 of a 3 part personal story. Dad (Stephen) describes his childhood as a Jehovah’s Witness, from his early experiences of being the only Witness at school and confidence that he had an angelic protector, his training in the preaching work and taking part in meetings, through to leaving school and getting baptised. Dad remembers his dominant emotions of fear and anxiety and the concept of bloodguilt, as well as a belief that he would have to endure persecution. This against a background of growing doubts about what he’d been taught and his gradual realisation of his own beliefs.

We can relate so much to your story so far, Stephen. One thing I remember clearly was when I was 9 and feeling so different to everyone else at school. It was a churchy school too! I lost a ton of weight (which was good 🤣) as I couldn’t eat breakfast. My mom was a bit concerned but i got a pep talk and ate a Foxes Glacier Mint on the way to school each day. It was awful. I did have school friends but always felt self conscious. I worried all the time.

Brilliant podcast I can relate to do much of it, it makes sense now to me why I am and how i act today, my biggest fear was to be raped like the persecution in Malawi in the 70s ! I lost my childhood to the JW cult, and thousands of others have and will experience the same😓
